I guess it’s safe to talk about this Zazzle description now, right?

The officially licensed DuckTales e-Store launched somewhere during the summer of 2018 when the latter half of Season 1 was still airing. I was so...surprised to see something talk about Launchpad's background like this. Every other description I had come across just mentioned the “dim-witted with a big heart” stuff and how he’s the only pilot crazy enough to do what Scrooge tells him. This might still be the only source that revealed anything about him being a latchkey kid.

I had started sharing this sudden information elsewhere (as well as the site’s mentioning of Mrs. B going off the grid to take care of Webby) but then stopped after being concerned about it being spoilers. Yet at the same time, I was like, “Why would they tell us about this before we see it on the show? Shouldn’t it be ok if Disney themselves thought it was ok to release this?”

The shop did go down for a while sometime afterwards. I assumed it was because they released too much information so early, but by the time it came back, all of the descriptions were kept intact.

Well, anyways, if this still stands, Reboot!LP’s insecurities come from his parents not being around much to encourage him. This is quite a contrast from the way they were portrayed in their DT87 debut episode, “Top Duck”. Ripcord and Birdie were very supportive of their son and expressed how they appreciated his efforts, but Launchpad was too busy thinking negatively of himself to realize this. He thought he was a failure to his family and was fixated on wanting to impress them.

Perhaps the situation in the reboot is another misunderstanding. I was hoping that whenever Launchpad’s parents were going to be elaborated on in the show, that they never meant to come off as neglectful; that it was just the fact that their stunt piloting career was so demanding and, in result, caused LP to feel like they didn’t care about him. 

Maybe they weren’t exactly ready to become parents and didn’t want to slow down yet. Or piloting provided such a great source of income for their family that they didn’t want to stop. Whatever caused them to be wrapped up in their jobs, they probably didn’t realize how their actions affected their son until much later. Launchpad self-evicted himself from his parents’ house in the original series after messing up during one of their stunt shows, so something similar could have happened here, like possibly running away from home.

Also, depending on where his younger sister, Loopy, fits in all of this, LP’s fear of being replaced and not being good enough might stem from her. Having his parents be so busy, but then suddenly take so much time out for her, definitely could have upset him.

Uh...so, there’s your Launchpad angst for the day.
